According to local tradition, the town of Windsor was named by a pony express rider who compared the area's terrain to that which surrounds Windsor Castle in his home country of England. Located in the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, Windsor is a little town with a long history of farming. Lately, winemaking has become a more prevalent industry, and many small wineries call Windsor home. Featuring an old general store and meat market, Old Downtown is an unusual development, the goal of which is to inspire an interest in Windsor's past. The area is known for its restaurants, with the Windsor Town Green hosting a Sunday Farmers' Market from May through November. Concerts occur on warm summer nights. Windsor is also home to more than 1,000 acres of regional parkland and is the liftoff point of the annual Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic.
