The Midwest is home to some exceptional outdoor sites, but one of the favorites is the Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri. Boat, swim, fish, or just enjoy the stunning view. There is also prime terrain for biking, horseback riding, or hiking. The city of Branson offers more excitement with Silver Dollar City, Branson Landing shops, and gorgeously landscaped golf courses.

The Maquoketa Caves State park allows you to hike through lush greenery in between exploring dozens of unique caves like the Twin Arch, Shinbone, and Rainey Day. You can also check out the Loess Hills, naturally created during the Ice Age, these hills follow the Missouri River into western Iowa. Another cool fact is that the 220-mile scenic byway follows the Lewis and Clark trail while allowing you to check out forests, prairies, and scenic overlooks.

One of the most interesting things you can visit in Ohio is the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, which celebrates the liberty while taking a closer look at the history of slavery. The Columbus neighborhoods are also worth checking out, with bohemian style art studios and upscale boutiques. There's also bakeries, book shops, and delis to pop into while you explore.

Brown County is one of Indiana's most famed attractions, located just an hour south of Indianapolis. Here, you can explore hiking trails across the state's largest state park and then visit the art galleries and studios filled with works inspired by the scenery. If you are visiting during Memorial Day weekend, be sure to catch the Indy 500 to cheer on this exhilarating race.

Cruising along the midwest section of Route 66 is a fun and unique way to see the area. And of course there's plenty of incredible dining options you'll want to stop by. In Chicago, stop by the Lou Mitchell’s Restaurant and Bakery for a 50's style atmosphere, diner classics, and free donut holes. In St. Louis, stop by for the thickest custard at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. And for your history fill, be sure to visit Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum.

There's no shortage of exciting things to do in the state of Kansas. Once of the most famous is the Kansas speedway where you can catch as NASCAR race. Or, watch a gunfight at Dodge City, part of the Boot Hill Museum. You can also visit Lawrence, a college town that is home to a handful of interesting Civil War sites.
