Golfers will find an 18-hole course nearby, and adventurous visitors can thrill to river rafting. For the young and young-at-heart, roller skating can also be found within easy driving distance. Wayne National Forest, which surrounds the resort in Ohio, offers breathtaking beauty to nature and wildlife enthusiasts, as does Strouds Run State Park and Shade River State Forest. Old Man’s Cave at Logan is also a popular nearby attraction for visitors. In Athens, less than a 30-minute drive north of the resort, is the beautiful and historic campus of Ohio University, the first university chartered in the Northwest Territory in 1804. Visitors can tour the college green, Trisolini Gallery, Baker Center, and Gailbreath Chapel. Just a few miles north of Athens in Nelsonville, a scenic trip through Hocking Valley on a 1916 steam locomotive is offered every weekend during the summer. East of the resort, in Wellston, the Buckeye Furnace State Memorial is also open during the summer. Here visitors can see a reconstructed charcoal-fired iron blast furnace that was originally built in 1851. A short-drive south of the resort and across the Ohio River into West Virginia is Point Pleasant Battle Monument State Park. At the confluence of the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers an 85-foot monument commemorates the frontiersmen who fought and died here in a battle with the forces of Indian Chief Hokolesqua (Cornstalk) on October 10, 1774. The Mansion House Museum is also located in the park and contains artifacts of early settlers.
