Bellaire, Michigan, the heart of Antrim County, truly is one of the state's best kept secrets. The downtown is an easy walk, with excellent shops and good places to eat. The Village offers historic buildings, museums, parks and some of Michigan's most beautiful nature areas. You will leave the everyday world behind and enter a world of stunning beauty offered by mother nature. A prime example is the *Grass River Natural Area*, a 1,165 acre preserve comprised of wetlands and wildlife habitat. Miles of trails provide for enjoyable walking, bird watching, and wildflower identification. The non-profit GRNA offers over a hundred organized hikes and classes, all year round. Six short nature trails in mixed habitat. The Grass River Natural Area is a 1,000-acre mix of habitats: upland forests, fields, creeks, rivers, marshes, and swamps. Naturalists have identified more than 60 species of fish, reptiles, and amphibians here, as well as 400 different species of plants. The area encompasses the Grass River, which is a short connecting waterway joining Clam Lake and Lake Bellaire, both part of the Chain of Lakes in Antrim County. The natural area offers a close-up view of wetland flora and fauna, as well as other habitats. Special attractions: Hundreds of species of plants, 65 species of birds, 35 species of fish, and 33 species of reptiles and amphibians. Some recent changes have been made to make your visits even more enjoyable. All trails are self-guiding, each of the three trail heads is well marked, and the educational trail that skirts the wildlife cutting areas is intended for your year-round use. A *Perception Pathway* has been added for the visually-impaired. *TORCH LAKE* Torch Lake has been ranked by National Geographic as *the third most beautiful lake in the world.* At 18 miles long, it is Michigan's longest lake, and is the state's second largest lake, covering an area of 29 square miles. Torch Lake is located in northwestern Michigan's lower peninsula in what is referred to as the area's *chain of lakes* region. Many lakes and rivers run through the rolling hills from the town of Bellaire to Elk Rapids. One of the things that makes Torch Lake so beautiful is its unusual color – a mixture of pastel green, blue and turquoise. Some have called it a *Caribbean Blue.* The Torch Lake area abounds with recreational opportunities such as swimming, boating, sailing, kayaking, hiking and biking, and much, much more. The average depth of Torch Lake is over 200 feet, making it a good habitat for trout and a great fishing lake. Other species in the lake are rock bass, yellow perch, small mouth bass, lake trout, brown and rainbow trout. Just three miles from Torch Lake is the quaint town of Alden with shopping and restaurants, and the historic town of Bellaire just a few miles away with excellent shopping, sight-seeing and dining opportunities!
