Sint Maarten is located at the very eastern edge of the chain of volcanic islands that arc from Florida to Venezuela. It is located about 700 miles SSE from Miami and about 200 miles SE of Puerto Rico. St Maarten is part of the Netherlands Antilles, five islands that previously were colonies of the Netherlands. Bonaire and Curacao are just off the coast of Venezuela, while St Maarten, St Eustatius, and Saba are five hundred miles to the north. To further complicate things, St Maarten only occupies the southern third of its island, as the French territory of St Martin occupies the northern two-thirds. It sounds confusing, but it isn't, as there are no border crossing guards, no customs, no immigration; so if you want dinner in France, drive over - no problem, mon. At 18? north latitude, St Maarten is well within the tropics. The sunny, winter days range from 70?F to 80?F (21?C to 27?C) and the tradewinds generally keep the summer temperatures only 5?F (3?C) warmer. The 38-square mile island is edged with beaches, filled with restaurants, and alive with nightlife. If after a tough day at the beach and a spectacular meal, you want more; check out the movies, casinos, and discos. Of course, duty-free shopping is available. It takes less than two hours to drive all the way around the island. Thus, no place is more than an hour away.
