During Hurricane Wilma, this resort was the last to be evacuated as Royal Resorts have always been used as a shelters during prior extreme hurricanes. This time the Mexican government did force the evacuation, however occupants were gone from the resort for only 24 hrs. There was minimal superficial damage and resort (Villa) owners were among the first helping to clean the sand out of the pool. Our flight was for the week after the hurricane. Flights were not flying in, so we were not there, but friends of ours were staying there using one of our weeks. They were extremely happy that they were in the Royal Sands during Hurricane Wilma. Lifetime friends were made. They did not lack food or water as the Royal Sands did an excellent job of looking after their guests.
