Highlights from ARDA’s 2022 State of the Vacation Timeshare Industry Report

The 2022 State of the Vacation Timeshare Industry came out with many insights and data on the current vacation ownership industry. This is ARDA’s annual report that compares key industry performance metrics by geography, resort type, resort size, sales activity, and more. The report shows how the industry is making a strong comeback following the 2020 pandemic.

Average occupancy went up in 2021 to 73.1% after it was only 49.2% in 2020. This nearly reached the occupancy rates of 2019 (79.3%) Additionally, the average sales price of timeshares and maintenance fees did not see significant negative impacts from the pandemic, which is great news for new and current timeshare owners.

In 2021, the timeshare industry started to return to normal. The ARDA report showed that sales increased by 64% and more owners and guests felt comfortable returning to their treasured vacation experiences.

Resort by Type Data

The 2022 State of the Vacation Timeshare Industry also displayed some interesting information regarding the percentage of vacation ownership resorts that offer specific amenities that travelers seek. Some of the most notable included:

  • Golf – 80%
  • Beach – 65%
  • Rural/coastal – 54%
  • Country/lakes – 45%
  • Mountains – 43%
  • Ski – 43%

The majority of properties are known as “beach resorts,” with beach access either right on the resort grounds or very close by. Golf is also a big draw with many properties advertising on-site or nearby courses.

Beach resorts are the most common primary resort-type; golf is most often available nearby and/or onsite. Resorts reported between five and six of these vacation experiences available per resort on average. Other vacation experiences include national and state parks, historic sites, and vineyards/wineries.

The report also collected data to show the average maintenance fees per interval for the abovementioned resort types. This showed the following:

  • Ski – $1,310
  • Golf – $1,110
  • Country/lakes – $1,020
  • Beach – $1,000
  • Rural/coasta – $920
  • Mountains – $770

Mountain resorts are shown to have the lowest maintenance fees on average, with ski resorts coming in with the most expensive annual dues. Other “types” of resorts include theme park, island, desert, urban, gaming, and waterpark.

Resort by Location Data

In regards to resort locations, Florida, California, South Carolina, Hawaii, and Nevada are the five states with the highest number of timeshare resorts. These five states are home to almost half of the timeshare resorts in the United States and nearly two-thirds of all US timeshare units.

  • Florida – 24%
  • California – 9%
  • South Carolina – 7%
  • Hawaii – 6%
  • Nevada – 4%

Resort Location Maintenance Fee Data

The state of Florida has the most resorts, but Nevada has the largest resorts with the greatest amount units. In terms of maintenance fees, Hawaii has the highest billed dues. Average annual dues by the state are as follows:

  • Hawaii – $1,130
  • California – $1,120
  • Florida – $1090
  • South Carolina – $1080
  • Nevada – $1,000
