Things to Consider Before Buying Disney Vacation Club Timeshare

Disney Vacation Club is an incredibly popular vacation ownership club. This flexible points-based ownership allows you to enjoy numerous Disney-themed resorts located near your favorite parks and attractions. It is so popular in fact that the majority of the resorts are completely sold out through the developer and the only way to enjoy DVC ownership is by purchasing through the secondary marketplace.

If you are wondering how to become a DVC member and asking yourself, “Is Disney Vacation Club worth it?” We can help! Here are 4 things to consider before buying a DVC timeshare.

Try Before Your Buy

A great perk about shopping the secondary market is the number of timeshare rentals you will find in addition to resale properties. You can find Disney timeshare rentals at many of the popular Disney resorts. Timeshare rentals are often advertised to cover annual maintenance fees when the owner cannot visit the property in any given year. This allows you to vacation at these resorts for an incredibly affordable rate while experiencing the DVC lifestyle firsthand. You are not required to attend a sales presentation, you can just simply enjoy all the timeshare accommodations and resort has to offer. This way you can see if buying a DVC timeshare is the right choice for you!

Choose Your Home Resort

There are many wonderful DVC resorts to choose from, including properties in Central Florida, California, Vero Beach, Hilton Head Island, and Hawaii. Your home resort is the default property you own your Disney points at and will visit most years. These points can be used to make reservations up to seven months prior to your desired check-in date. However, with your home resort, you can reserve eleven to eight months before check-in, making it easier to secure the dates you want.

Consider Annual Maintenance Fees

Like every other timeshare ownership, buying a Disney Vacation Club timeshare comes with its share of annual dues and fees. While you will save thousands on your ownership when you buy through the resale market, the maintenance fees are still a part of the ownership. These fees cover a variety of things from resort upkeep, maintenance, taxes, and renovations. Every owner pays these annual dues to help the resort in great condition and operate smoothly. Think of them like the money you would pay towards the upkeep of a vacation home.

DVC fees are calculated per point, meaning the more points you have, the more dues you will pay each year. The statements for these costs come out mid-December and are due by January 15th every year. If you are interested in a specific resort, it would be smart to contact them directly to find out what owners are currently paying per point for annual maintenance fees.

Resale Restrictions

Buying a DVC resale is the easiest and most affordable to buy into the vacation club, however, it is definitely worth it to consider the restrictions that come with buying on the secondary market. Disney Vacation Club has put numerous resale restrictions in place so that those who buy on the secondary market don’t have full access to membership benefits of those that bought through the developer. Most notable resale restrictions include:

  • Inability to access certain collections within the Member Getaways Program including Adventurer, Concierge, and Disney
  • Inability to use the DVC Membership Extras benefits package that gets you a variety of discounts and access to members-only events
  • As of 2019, those who buy DVC resale points can only visit the 14 original Disney properties. Any new resorts to come, resale owners will not be able to exchange for

Even with these restrictions, resale owners are still able to enjoy a deluxe Disney getaway with access to wonderful resorts, accommodations, and beloved Disney parks and attractions.
