The popular timeshare brand is slated to test out several new smart tech features at its hotels and resorts, namely functions that guests and owners can accomplish right from their smartphones. Club members who use the Hilton Honors app may soon be able to do much more from their phones, as room information will soon be integrated with an individual’s device on a stay-by-stay basis.

The shift to smarter rooms is being called “the Connected Room,” and allows guests at Hilton Grand Vacations resorts to unlock doors and control in-room features from their smartphone. The vision includes guests having the ability to control lighting, room temperature, and even change the channel or volume on televisions all from the Hilton Honors app. The move would put more power into the pockets of timeshare owners, sparing them from having to handle door locks, thermostats, or remote controls.

However, the future of smart tech in Hilton resorts may still be far off. So far, only around 500 hotel rooms in the Hilton network have been outfitted with the technology, with only 1,000 aimed to be ready by the end of 2018. As the brand controls more than 5,000 properties worldwide, global smartphone capabilities may be far off. In any case, for those who prefer the old method of swiping keycards and dialing up the thermostat, manual controls will remain in addition to upgraded features.
