Trends in the Holiday Travel 2021 Season

Last year, we were stuck home for the holidays. We stay connected with loved ones through FaceTime and Zoom but were forced to cancel our travel plans. While 2021 was still a challenging year in many ways, traveling has become much more possible and more importantly, much safer.

We are feeling optimistic looking ahead at some of the 2021 holiday travel trends that we will be engaging in some fun travel experiences this season and into the New Year!

2021 Holiday Travel Trends

It’s no secret that travel is on the rise. A survey taken by Vacasa has shown that about 47-percent of people plan to travel this holiday season, with 20-percent still unsure about their travel plans.

While 49-percent have said they will change their plans if there is a COVID-19 spike, that number is down nearly three-quarters from 2020. People are highly motivated to travel this year after being unable to last holiday season. 40-percent had to change their travel plans last year, compared to 19-percent this year. It is great to see these numbers moving in a positive direction!

A unique “perk” to come out of the pandemic is the ability for people to work remotely more often. To help make traveling less hectic during the holidays, 61-percent of people working full or part-time have agreed that working remotely allows them to avoid the busiest travel days. Additionally, 57-percent that working remotely gives them the opportunity and flexibility to extend their trips.

Top 2021 Holiday Travel Destinations

Trips within the US are the most popular holiday travel destination this year, many are visiting loved ones in other states. Outside of domestic travel, people are looking to find somewhere sunny and warm to spend the 2021 December holidays.


Neighbor to the United States, Mexico is high on the list of places to travel for the 2021 holiday season. Mexico is easy to travel to and offers a great selection of destinations to choose from. Each destination offers rich culture and a wide range of outdoor adventures to be had. Mexico is great to visit year-round, but the tropical climate will feel especially nice during the winter months.
