The new year is finally here. Not only a new year, but a whole new decade is upon us! It’s always exciting to start off with a clean slate with new goals and new ambitions. At SellMyTimeshareNow.com, we are always looking for new and fun ways to travel. As such, we like to keep up with the times, and looking at the 2020 travel trends is the best way to do just that!
Here are some of our favorite travel trends for 2020 that we look forward to participating in!
Mail-in DNA tests have been hugely popular over the past couple of years, with many people wanting to learn about their ancestors and where they came from. In turn, this has inspired many new travel opportunities. Avid travelers who have new-found knowledge of their family history are now going and booking trips in search of their roots.
DNA travel, also known as ‘ancestral tourism,’ is one of the big 2020 travel trends you may want to hop on board with. Many popular DNA test kit companies such as 23andMe or AncestryDNA provide maps with origin percentages by the area/country. This allows you to easily plan a trip based on where the majority of your roots come from.
Recent data has shown that this travel trend is so popular that 23% of people taking long vacations in Scotland are visiting for ancestry reasons!
This is a broad term for a 2020 travel trend and the term ‘environmental travel’ can mean a lot of different things. In the past, we’ve discussed how to be a responsible tourist and how post-natural disaster tourism is important, and these are both related to environmental tourism.
Sustainable and ‘green’ travel is certainly on the rise, encouraging people to take volunteer vacations and participate in cleaning, planting, or building in areas of need. Then there is the rise in various hotel and resort brands becoming more eco-friendly to make it easier for green travelers to feel good about where they’re staying. These travelers will also plan eco-friendly outings in nature such as visiting farms and natural parks.
On the other end, people are also paying more attention to carbon offsetting. As such, travelers are looking to balance the negative impact of their vacations by working to make a positive difference. This can be done by donating money and shopping sustainably while traveling.
A more unique 2020 travel trend that has come up is referred to as “literary travel.” Essentially, this trend centers around traveling based on your favorite author, book, or book festival.
Some examples of literary-inspired travel include visiting Hannibal Missouri for a Mark Twain-themed trip or going to England for a Harry Potter-inspired jaunt. Others will base trips off visiting iconic libraries or big-name book festivals that happen all across the US. One of the most popular being the Baltimore Book Festival, which attracts thousands who have come to see their favorite authors speak or have their books signed.
We recently wrote a whole post about the second city travel trend regarding some of the best “second cities” you can visit this year for an incredible vacation.
In short, this 2020 travel trend is the practice of skipping the vacation in a major city and traveling to a “lesser-known” city nearby. Vacationing in a second city is more affordable, you’ll deal with fewer crowds, and you’ll get to experience a place that is more off the beaten path. There are both big and small cities that are considered “secondary” to major cities or state capitals. Do some research and find one that suits your interests!
It’s never too early to start planning your 2020 vacations. Use these travel trends for 2020 to help influence your planning and inspire you to go somewhere new. Here’s to many adventures and fun vacations this year!
