Starwood is probably best known as the parent company of the acclaimed Westin resorts, Sheraton resorts, and St. Regis resorts. However, Starwood's exceptional palette of offerings extends beyond these three well-known brands to include other desirable resort destinations like the inimitable Harborside Resort at Atlantis, located in the Bahamas.
Regardless of brand affiliation and location, all Starwood vacation properties (even Westin timeshares and Sheraton timeshares) are sold as deeded timeshare interests - either as fixed week or floating season ownership. Here are some of the great benefits of becoming a Starwood Vacation Owner:
*A Note to Buyers: If you purchase your Starwood time share on the resale market, you must purchase at one of the five "Mandatory" resorts in order to qualify for StarOptions. (See the next section for details.)
For vacationers not interested in timeshare ownership, we also have Starwood Westin and Starwood Sheraton time share properties available for rent - for less than you would pay to book a reservation through the resort! Each resort in the Starwood Vacation Network - regardless if it is a Westin resort, Sheraton resort, or St. Regis resort - is assigned a StarOptions value. The value of a resort week depends on the popularity of the home resort, size of the unit, dates of travel and the length of your stay. When owners convert their week into StarOptions - which function similar to a points-based exchange system - they can then exchange their Options for time at other Starwood timeshares. External exchange opportunities are, of course, also available through Interval International.
There are three main differences between purchasing Starwood time shares from the developer and purchasing Starwood resales. The first, (and probably most important) difference is that not all resale owners are eligible to participate in the StarOptions program - also known as the Starwood Vacation Network (SVN). Resale owners who purchase at one of the five "Mandatory Resorts" ARE allowed to participate in the SVN, while owners who purchase at a "Voluntary Resort" may NOT be.
If being able to exchange to other Starwood resort properties (without paying a fee) is important to you, consider purchasing at one of these resorts:
While many new owners are disappointed to learn that not all resale weeks are eligible for StarOptions, most also feel that the cost-savings of purchasing on the resale market outweigh the loss of this feature. Also, keep in mind that resale owners at any of the Starwood vacation properties can join Interval International (which has very reasonable exchange rates) and gain the ability to visit other destinations in addition to their home resort.
The second difference between those who buy Starwood timeshare straight from the developer and those who buy on the resale market is that resale owners are not eligible for the Starwood Preferred Guest Program. The Preferred Guest Program allows owners to exchange their weeks for StarPoints® which can then be redeemed at additional Westin and Sheraton hotels around the world. (StarPoints can also be converted into other travel perks like airline miles and car rentals.)
Third, resale owners cannot become "Elite Owners." An Elite Owner is a Starwood Vacation Owner who has purchased multiple Starwood units from a resort (entitling him or her to additional perks). While a resale purchase does not entitle an owner to Elite status, Starwood has been known to "requalify" resale weeks for owners who subsequently purchase weeks straight from the developer (enabling those owners to count all their weeks toward Elite Status and the StarPoints program).
